Do you have an enquiring mind, a passion for science and a keen interest in learning and applying new skills? Then the new BTEC Nationals in Applied Science, which includes elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as practical experience, is the ideal course for you. This new course uses a combination of assessment styles, both practical and written, to give you confidence to apply your knowledge to succeed in the workplace – and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout your career.

The National Diploma is equivalent to 2 A-Levels.

Teaching & Assessment

National Extended Certificate: Four units in total including two internally set assignment (coursework) units, one controlled assessment task and one written exam.

National Diploma: Eight units in total including five internally set assignment (coursework) units, one controlled assessment task and two written exams.

Vocational Progression

The BTEC National qualification in Applied Science provides the preparation required to progress into many roles in the Science Sector. For example it can be used to progress onto scientifically related degree courses such as Forensic Science, Biomedical Science, Midwifery and Chemical Sciences.

If you prefer to get a job after Sixth Form, this qualification would be a stepping stone to working in: a Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory; a Quality Control Laboratory in different sectors such as Industrial Manufacturing and Chemical Manufacturing; a Materials Testing Laboratory in the Construction, Paper or Plastics Industry; and a University Research Laboratory.

• Science Investigation Skills (controlled assessment task)
National Diploma, as above plus:
• Laboratory Techniques and their Application (assignment)
• Investigative Project (assignment)

Year 13
National Extended Certificate
• Optional Unit 1 (assignment)
• Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (assignment)
National Diploma, as above plus:
• Principles and Applications of Science II (external assessment)
• Optional Unit 2 (assignment)
Optional units include:
• Physiology of Human Body Systems
• Applications of Inorganic Chemistry
• Astronomy and Space Science
